We'd initially planned to have the hackspace AGM tomorrow. However, due to
a combination of factors, we've decided to push it back to Tuesday the 30th
of July.
Hopefully that's an ok date. Any issues or questions, please let me know.
We'll email more info soon, but all the original details are as they were,
except the date of course 🙂
If you've not thought about volunteering for being a director, please give
it some consideration. The amount of practical time it takes up is pretty
minimal, and it's a great way to help the hackspace. Also it's fun 😛

Dear Friends and/or 57 North Members
57 North Hacklab Ltd. will be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) at
20:00 on Tuesday 18th of June 2024 in the Hacklab's space in Suite H,
Kettock Lodge, Innovation Park, Campus Two, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen AB22
8GU.
Much of the procedure for the AGM is laid out in the articles of
association which can be obtained from Companies House.
Our current membership count is about 10, a quarter of 10 is 2.5 which is
less than 5, so quorum for the meeting will require 5 members (see Article
44).

we've been discussing changes to them at
https://github.com/hackerdeen/articles/issues
The AGM is intended to be a check that we are sticking to our legal
requirements rather than going through the day to day running of the space
(issues about the day to day running would be better raised on the discuss
mailing list).
We are now accepting nominations for anyone who wishes to stand for
election as a director for the next year. Nominations can be made by
sending an email to 57north-announce at lists.57north.co stating that you
would like to stand (and some explanation of why) before the meeting or by
indicating that you want to stand when we get to that part of the meeting.
Please send it as soon as possible.
The details of how the election of directors will be conducted will be up
to whoever is elected to chair the meeting (Articles 48, 51 and 52) but
will probably be something along the lines of: if we have less than 5
candidates more nominations will be sought until we get to 5 or more
candidates. If we have exactly 5 candidates at the AGM then they will
become the new board. If we have more than 5 candidates then we'll have an
election to decide who gets to be a director.
If any member can't make the meeting there are a couple of things they can
do to participate should they wish to.
Any issues you'd like to have raised at the meeting can be sent to
57north-discuss at lists.57north.org.uk or privately to any of the
directors or to the directors collectively at 57north-ctte-private at
lists.57north.org.uk (please make it clear you are sending something you
want raised at the AGM) and we will see that it is brought up.
A proxy can be appointed to vote on your behalf at the meeting (see
Articles 47, 53 and 54). If you would like to appoint a proxy please send
an email to 57north-ctte-private at lists.57north.co
Email sent to the 57north-ctte-private address is redirected to all
presently listed directors and is not archived by 57North Hacklab (but may
be by the individual directors).
The email should contain:
- Your name and address (as it appears in the register of members
(hackhub))
- Who you would like to appoint as a proxy
- That this is for the AGM on 18th of June 2025
- If you have any specifications for how the proxy is to act on your
behalf.
The proxy should bring the same details to the meeting on paper and signed
by the member they are to act as a proxy for.
Remote participation in our meetings is allowed, if anyone who can't make
it to the meeting would like to participate remotely, we can set up a
conference call and/or video call for the meeting. Any members who would
like to connect via one of these channels should let me know - it will not
be set this up unless demand for it is communicated to me. If anyone has a
different preference for how they would like to participate remotely, let
me know and I'll see what can be done.

I'm going to Bring this back into discuss,
I disagree with membership being use as an issue here. Someone not being
a paying member is not a concern I have over decision making in 57north.
However the spending we do has to aligned with to forwarding 57north is,
I would ague that these stickers are really for Scotcon, where there is
an overlap and raises the profile of 57north in the national and
international community.

I am taking this email chain out of the discussion mailing list.
We are appreciative of your work putting into designing stickers,
however there are some serious concerns about your request. Some have
already been raised by other directors of 57North.
We are a community led organisation, and do not have the budget to spend
£320 on stickers. If it were to be £100 or so, that would be different
story.
Our source of income is generated through membership fees, and we want
to ensure the money is not spend on a folly of one or two of the
members, but rather have a meaningful contribution to the community.
Without knowing the actual designs of your stickers, we do not have
sufficient information to assess whether your stickers are a folly or
benefit the hackerspace members. Looking at the file names, my
observation is they are for your folly, i.e. social centre activity, but
I am happy to be corrected.
Another point of concern is that you are not a paying member. While you
are free to make suggestions to the space, we are free to ignore them.
On this occasion we have given it consideration, and not deemed it
worthwhile for our cause. If you were a paying member, you would be
having more say in our spends, but not at this time.
If you have any queries on our decision making, I would encourage you to
become a paying member and raise them queries at the AGM.

Took some stickers off the list and Midder is happy to pay £120, so

It's Tuesday, so we will have our weekly open night.
If you've not heard of us, 57North get up to a range of activities on
Tuesday nights in our shared workspace, including (but not limited to)
social contact, programming, manufacturing weird things, consuming sugary
treats and the odd can of alcoholic beverage. Typically we kick off at 1930.
We're located at:

Aberdeen

someone shall come and rescue you from downstairs after a brief wait.
There's plenty of parking, but if you don't have transport, then get in
touch either here or IRC and someone may be able to help you out! The
number 1 bus comes nearby too.
If you're new, I'd suggest you bring a laptop, and perhaps a project you
want to work on. If you're not new, shoot a reply to the list and tell us
what you'll be up to, and maybe consider bringing a friend. Please mention
a time if you'll be in before me!
If you are a regular on a Tuesday night, then please consider becoming a
member. More information on the benefits and application process can be
found at [1]
We like our space being accessible for all. When visiting, please ensure
you tidy up after yourself, clean any dishes, cups, cutlery and store them
away. There are vacuum cleaners too, for cleaning the floor. If you have
any questions, please ask one of the regular visitors or members for advise.

Hello from Spain!
I am aware today that the charity have *again* expressed frustration about the state of the hackerspace to the directors. This is likely to get us in real trouble if it keeps happening.
Andy has been in to have a run around and hoover this afternoon. The bulk of mess he's dealt with has been food crumbs/crisps.
If you could take a look at your surroundings and find 1-2 things to improve this evening that'd be much appreciated! It's easy to not see mess because things have been static that way for a while - don't be afraid to mix things up!
Have a quick read through the closedown to-do [1] and think about it/follow it as you close the space tonight. If there's a step that is missing, edit the wiki.
