Hi y'all
I went to a viewing and for a chat with Outer Spaces on Tuesday, it seemed
like it might be useful to share thoughts and notes from it.
If you've not heard of Outer Spaces, they're a scottish charity that places
artists and creatives in empty commercial space. It's a really good
scheme, with benefits all round. For more info, see outerspaces.org
Just to mention up front, 57N is not looking to move any time soon. This
was just me trying to understand more about the scheme and to meet the
people involved. For home hunting history, see the wiki at
https://wiki.57north.org.uk/doku.php?id=possible_future_space with notes
from 2019.
They have a mailing list, and email out when spaces become available. Last
week they emailed out about an office block at the west end of Union St
called Holburn House, see
https://mailchi.mp/58365edcad95/31-32-westside-plaza-wester-hailes-9322281?…
I went to a public viewing on Tuesday afternoon, there were about 30 people
there.
There is a mixed bag of photos at....
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1W9XhLvMCFbRYn7xqTfLDqmF1BybDcarb?us…
About holburn house:
- Holburn house is 3/4 empty, there is 1600m2 available over 3 floors.
- Underground parking is available
- It has keypad entry
- They do not allow "hot works", like soldering, laser cutting, kilns etc
- They don't allow dusty work, like plaster, cutting wood, etc
- You can't put up partitions
- There are no separate lockable spaces
- energy bill are included, within reason
- wifi is not included
- loo roll, cleaning etc is not included
How the Outer Spaces generally works:
- You can apply for space as a group or individual
- They also have filled offices in Dyce and Westhill
- They also have shops and food venues available sometimes
- PPL is required, but is available from £4p/m
- Tenants are guaranteed minimum 7 days notice if the space finds a
commercial tenant
- The people running it seem spot on, plain-speaking and helpful
- More spaces will come up soon
- Other set-ups are possible, could be discussed
I will keep following what's being done by Outer Spaces, and share anything
interesting with the mailing list.
Hope that's all semi-useful/helpful. Any thoughts or queries, just reply
here.
Cheers
Andy

I recon I will be in, I plan to clean my camera to see if that helps
with the scratches on negatives, solder up a bluescsi v2 and if someone
will explain how to be cut something with a laser.
That is too much of a todo list for a tuesday.
See you there

Dear Friends and/or 57 North Members
57 North Hacklab Ltd. will be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) at
20:00 on Tuesday the 4th April 2023 in the Hacklab's space in Suite H,
Kettock Lodge, Innovation Park, Campus Two, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen AB22
8GU.
Much of the procedure for the AGM is laid out in the articles of
association which can be obtained from Companies House.
Our current membership count is about 12, a quarter of 12 is 3 which is
less than 5, so quorum for the meeting will require 5 members (see Article
44).
Our articles can be found at https://github.com/hackerdeen/articles and
we've been discussing changes to them at
https://github.com/hackerdeen/articles/issues
The AGM is intended to be a check that we are sticking to our legal
requirements rather than going through the day to day running of the space
(issues about the day to day running would be better raised on the discuss
mailing list).
We are now accepting nominations for anyone who wishes to stand for
election as a director for the next year. Nominations can be made by
sending an email to 57north-announce at lists.57north.co stating that you
would like to stand (and some explanation of why) before the meeting or by
indicating that you want to stand when we get to that part of the meeting.
Please send it as soon as possible.
The details of how the election of directors will be conducted will be up
to whoever is elected to chair the meeting (Articles 48, 51 and 52) but
will probably be something along the lines of: if we have less than 5
candidates more nominations will be sought until we get to 5 or more
candidates. If we have exactly 5 candidates at the AGM then they will
become the new board. If we have more than 5 candidates then we'll have an
election to decide who gets to be a director - previously [2] we've done
this with via opavote.org.
If any member can't make the meeting there are a couple of things they can
do to participate should they wish to.
Any issues you'd like to have raised at the meeting can be sent to
57north-discuss at lists.57north.org.uk or privately to any of the
directors or to the directors collectively at 57north-ctte-private at
lists.57north.org.uk (please make it clear you are sending something you
want raised at the AGM) and we will see that it is brought up.
A proxy can be appointed to vote on your behalf at the meeting (see
Articles 47, 53 and 54). If you would like to appoint a proxy please send
an email to 57north-ctte-private at lists.57north.co
Email sent to the 57north-ctte-private address is redirected to all
presently listed directors and is not archived by 57North Hacklab (but may
be by the individual directors).
The email (preferably PGP signed, with a key trusted by the directors to be
yours) should contain:
- Your name and address (as it appears in the register of members
(hackhub))
- Who you would like to appoint as a proxy
- That this is for the AGM on 16th April 2019
- If you have any specifications for how the proxy is to act on your
behalf.
The proxy should bring the same details to the meeting on paper and signed
by the member they are to act as a proxy for.
Remote participation in our meetings is allowed, if anyone who can't make
it to the meeting would like to participate remotely, we can set up a
conference call and/or video call for the meeting. Any members who would
like to connect via one of these channels should let me know - it will not
be set this up unless demand for it is communicated to me. If anyone has a
different preference for how they would like to participate remotely, let
me know and I'll see what can be done.
Sorry if you get this more than once.
The 57N directors :)
Howdy all,
It's the AICC this weekend at Curl Aberdeen in Woodend! The draw is attached so you can see times!
Some of the best mens teams in the world are descending on the city to play against each other in the race to the world mens championships in Canada at the start of April.
There's a bar with coffees, teas, beers, wines and excellent cakes and people you've never heard of sliding stones.
Teams to keep an eye on are Bruce Mouat, current scottish champ & olympic silver medallist, Joel Retournaz of Italy as his moustache a decade ago was excellent[1], Stocker from Switzerland and there's probably other good curling people there too.
Kenny and I might swing in for a drink at some point if anyone else fancies hanging out!
