Hello friends!
Some time ago, Wouter dropped off an HP desktop at the space for us to use!
It has 16GB of RAM and I think an I5 something or other and is quite compact in volume.
There's also a CD drive in case you're like me and want to rip some discs to flac.
I've booted it with Debian live and it's lovely.
I'd like to request up to 50 pounds from the hackerspace bank account to get this up
and running as a user station beside the printer running Windows & MS Office. I think
I'll try using that big 4k tv as the monitor too, that seems fun.
Why Windows? We have a variety of interesting people come through the space and I think
there's value in having a familiar computer they can use that we know can print. It
would be nice to have a machine that supports fusion360 for 3d modelling too, as people
seem to like that!
There's no reason we can't dual boot into a linux environment too.
This spend for a cheap 500GB NVME drive [1] and probably won't come up to that much,
but I'd like a little wiggle room for any accessories we may need to get it running.

That sounds like a great idea. That Crucial one in your link is now 40%
off by the looks of it, so £36.
I was going to replace the 500GB NVME in my desktop with a 2TB one, so the
other option would be I could just donate my current one. I'll probably
swap it out next weekend.

We finally made a movement on this project tonight. The PC has been set up with
Windows on a small SSD and a local account!
The machine also has Firefox, MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, etc),

It is configured to speak to our big printer and has the correct driver panel
to do duplex printing, 2-on-a-page printing etc. Magic!
Bring a USB stick and use it to make good things happen with this power.
Are there any other applications we think should be on it? I lean towards
something like Fusion360.
I plan to replace the 4x3 screens with a pair of 22" 16x9 monitors - tony
kindly brought one in and I've got one at home that can be used too.

That looks like a wonderful piece of software.
We could use our excessive amounts of PLA to print Lego bricks and then
design fun stuff .

It struggles to run on my M1 MacMini with 16GB RAM but I don't know if that's just
the amd64 emulation. It is excellent software though, and you can export the list of parts
easily to BrickLink and then buy the exact parts you need for the build.

I've run it fine on non-exciting T470 thinkpad, so perhaps it's not great
with the emulation.
