Hi,
I've just watched a discussion about "Meshtastic" on Destination Linux:
@Iain, are you interested or have you already used something similar for
alerting volunteers to go to a resilience hub and start up the generator
during a winter storm during a prolonged power-cut when all the phone
networks are down?

Morning Tony!
Funny you mention meshtastic - I've just received a T-Beam supreme [1] for use with a
different firmware on the 400MHz amateur band for our established 'APRS'
service[2] for location tracking, messaging, brodcast bulletins etc.
It seems like meshtastic is on 868MHz ISM band in the UK so my unit won't be
compatible.
It's quite a cool project, and I'm seeing an uptick of people interested in
amateur radio because of it!

I had a Meshtastic node on 868 at home for a while. Wasn't much activity in
Aberdeen then so I turned it off... moved it over to TinyGS lora satellite
receiver but not many sats on 868 so turned it off again 😅
Have a TinyGS on 433 now and a similar setup as Hibby for APRS.
Plenty of excuses to acquire more SBCs!

I looked at the map - TinyGS are a bit thin on the ground up here!
What I'm really interested in is low-cost p2p radio communication in an
emergency or disaster situation when the telecoms infrastructure is down
because of storm damage or other disruption. I'm a member of a local
'resilience-hub' team responsible for starting a generator and opening
up our community Hall for people when the power is off due to storms.

anything with it, and it'll just be another thing in the drawer.

I've been looking at the LILYGO Meshtastic T-Echo 868MHz version:

I want to try it out using an SBC, like the Heltec board that Alex has
offered to give me next Tue, but if we go ahead and adopt the idea we
will need them in robust portable cases like the LILYGO. Lots of other
options, but the LILYGO T-Echo seems to be grabbing a lot of attention.

I've just ordered two of these direct from LILYGO:
@Iain, My plan is to set up a 'base-station' at our Hall, using the
board kindly donated to me by Alex, and see what sort of range we can
get with the portable units.
@Hibby, I did think about using an Rpi as a 'base-station' but you have
to buy quite a few other bits and pieces before you can configure it for
Meshtastic: Hoping it will be easier using the board Alex is giving me!
@Alex, I'm happy to buy the board off you or I could just borrow it from
you if all this rekindles your interest in Meshtastic on 868MHz?
