The light pollution map truly was a nice experience - thanks!
Being a Finn - and curious of astronomy - I know that the Finnish astronomy association
maintains a list of good observation places for dark skies. Here’s the site:

I don’t see why one couldn’t share a good observation place from other countries as well.

I have seen the aurora a few times from
parents' place in the light blue bit between Huntly and Turriff and once from
Scotstown Moor (but that only worked with very bright aurora and completely clear night -
no chance of seeing them there most of the time).
Out past Alford looks to be the best bet closest to Aberdeen. Or RSPB Troup Head is in
the dark bit of coast between Banff and Fraserburgh and has a car park.
Anyone coming out past Bridge of Alford is welcome to call in here and thaw out after
freezing their toes off looking for the Aurora :-)
