Thanks for your input. I appreciate there are too many unknowns but it
gives me a way to feel my way through the process.
Interesting idea to possibly keep mechanicals and just change the PCB,
given that the mouid for plastics is not cheap.
Up until now manufacturing has been primarily UK, with Cocom.

Hi Lawrence,
I do low-volume hardware design and have dealt with some hardware design houses.
It depends a lot on your requirements. Turn-key design on something
like this would start at a few hundred grand with one of the larger
folks like Plexus or Celestica. You could perhaps halve that for a
smaller design house but that comes with more risk and involvement on
your part.
Without more detail it's difficult to be more precise. Annual unit
volume has a large impact on design approach and costs. Manufacturing
overseas is cheaper for larger volumes but has more upfront costs and
risks with setup and QA. If you're planning on keeping your mechanical
design and tooling, and only changing your PCBs, then that will lower
costs. A blank-slate hardware design will obviously cost more than
pruning the obsolete parts from your current designs, if that's even
feasible. If you can re-use production test equipment then that would
save on development costs. Certification costs vary wildly depending
on the certifications you're going for, this also impacts design
approach.

Nick

Afternoon:
Is anyone linked to the hackspace involved in hardware design or work
for a hardware design house.
Background:
I work for Canary Care and our current hardware is getting a little long
in the tooth so we are looking at redesign as an option. But I have no
real idea of the costs involved.
So I am looking to get a ball park figure to do the package from
hardware design through to production ready and through regulatory
testing. In odl terms back of a cigarette packet numbers.
The system currently has three different radio systems Mobile Data, BLE
and NFC (yes NFC counts a radio).
So anyone out there with experience in this arena?
