ASC WEEKLY NEWSLETTER ------------------------- News from Wed 20-Aug-2025 Hello Friends. We have another busy weekend with another refugee hotel protest planned by the far-right, in Westhill at 5pm this week, see below, if you are in Westhill or connected with communities there please share. It is also the Celebrate Aberdeen parade and SPSC will have a presence outside the art gallery from 11am. Between the two events there will be the cafe with Home-bakes, if you can supply some, they would be greatly appreciated, tea and Zapatista Coffee to keep us all going. We will also have a store cleaning day this Sunday from 2pm so groups come by and we can make the store a little more usable. Aberdeen, AB25 2ZN SOLIDARITY WITH REFUGEES AND VICTIMS OF IMPERIALISM External SCOTTISH PALESTINE SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN Saturday August 23rd 11:00-13:00 BST Weekly Demonstration in Support of Palestine, fighting ethnic-cleansing, apartheid, genocide and colonialism. This week it will start outside the Art Gallery and move to Belmont Street after the parade. RADICAL CAFE Meeting Room ABERDEEN SOCIAL CENTRE Saturday August 23rd 13:00-15:00 BST Our weekly Radical Cafe, a space to meet and build those connections with local activists, come along for convivial chat, a look at the new books in the swap and shop, and meet other people active in the city. We are also Saddened to hear of the passing of Steven from the Vegan Bay Bakery who supported us so well with cakes every week, our hearts go out to his family, and we'll greatly miss the butteries. **So until we source a new supply the cafe will be asking for home-bakes, you can bring butteries, cakes or whatever else you can rustle up for the overworked activists of Aberdeen. Any leftovers will be taken to Westhill to be distributed there. WESTHILL WELCOMES REFUGEES, NOT RACISM! External ABERDEEN ANTI-FASCIST ALLIANCE Saturday August 23rd 17:00-19:00 BST Community groups and local residents are gathering on Saturday 23 August, from 5-7pm, for a peaceful event outside the Hampton Hotel on Straik Road, Westhill. There will be food, music, colourful banners and messages of hope for the refugees living there. Why Now? Throughout August, angry protesters have targeted people seeking asylum across the UK, standing outside their homes and shouting threats and abuse. This has happened at two hotels in Aberdeen. Westhill is their next target. These protesters - often bussed in from all over Scotland - say it's about local concerns. So why are they targeting vulnerable people who have nothing to do with government cuts to public services? Protesters have zero evidence for their accusations about hotel residents, who are stuck here while the Home Office deals with a backlog of paperwork, and who volunteered to clear our parks after Storm Floris. Imagine fleeing your home, leaving everything behind to escape war or persecution, and suddenly finding yourself not only alone in a new country, but unable to go outside because a terrifying mob is threatening your life. This is _our_ community and we cannot let our neighbours be treated this way. If you're thinking, "plenty of folk will be there, I'll go if they turn up again," please note: Saturday will be the fifth such demonstration in our area in just three weeks - it is vital we stand together NOW and reject this message of hate! Please join us in a spirit of friendship and compassion to say "Our Community Cares." Westhill welcomes refugees, not racism!
